The Gift for Life Block Walk is an innovative community outreach program in which breast cancer survivors team with other volunteers to go door-to-door in underserved African American communities in order to promote breast health awareness. Each October, SNTNC collaborates with various community organizations and cancer services providers to distribute breast health educational information, mammogram brochures, breast cancer resource lists, and pink ribbons to signify breast health awareness. Each community member reached is invited to an event site at the conclusion of the walk to share in refreshments and fellowship with survivors and to visit exhibits sponsored by breast cancer resource and services agencies. In sum, this event provides community members an opportunity to learn about the disease and its impact in the African American population, interact with survivors of the disease, and hear stories about overcoming the disease from those who have such experience.
